Laser Eye Surgery Co-Management

How Co-Management Works

Laser eye surgery has the potential to give you near perfect vision, possibly for the first time in your life. While not everyone is a good candidate for laser eye surgery, it helps millions of people around the world every year. And it could help you too.

We’ll work in partnership with a laser eye surgeon of your choice to provide pre- and post-surgery care, including your initial evaluation, pre-operative care, and post-operative follow-up testing, procedures, and healing checks.

There are no laser eye surgeons in Prince George.

You’ll still need to travel to Kelowna, Vancouver, Calgary, or another large city with laser eye surgeons available for a few days for the actual surgery, but we can handle the pre-testing and up to 7 post-surgery visits in our clinic in Prince George, which means you should only need to make that out-of-town trip once.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery isn’t just one procedure—there are several types available, each designed to correct particular vision issues or to treat specific eye conditions, ranging from common refractive errors to cataracts and glaucoma.

  • Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, or LASIK, is the most well-known and the most common type of eye surgery. It’s used to correct vision problems like nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness, and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea.
  • Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is also used to treat near and farsightedness as well as astigmatism by reshaping the cornea, but it’s used mostly for people with thin corneas or who have a very active lifestyle that could cause complications during LASIK recovery.
  • Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) is used to treat corneal scars, injuries, and certain diseases.
  • Laser Glaucoma Treatments like Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) and laser peripheral iridotomy are used to help manage glaucoma.
  • Laser cataract surgery can be used to remove primary cataracts, and post-cataract laser treatments like a laser capsulotomy can be performed after cataract surgery to address clouding of the lens capsule caused by secondary cataracts.

Risks & Safety

All surgeries carry risk. We’ll discuss some possible complications and side effects of laser surgery in-depth with you if laser eye surgery is an option you’re exploring, but some of the common, usually temporary, side effects of most laser eye surgeries are:

  • Dry eyes
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Trouble seeing in low light conditions
  • Glare and halos

Effectiveness & Duration

Laser eye surgeries have excellent success rates, with more than 99% pf patients achieving 20/40 vision or better.1 And the best part? Those results are as close to permanent as we can get…

Most laser eye surgeries are intended to correct your vision completely and last for the rest of your life. Of course, this doesn’t prevent your eyes from continuing to change over time due to factors like age, presbyopia (difficulty focusing on close objects), or the progression of underlying conditions, but your vision is still that much better than it would otherwise have been.
